Terms and Conditions of Use

Use of stories

The stories on the African Storybook Project (ASb) website are openly licensed.

An open licence means that you can read, download, print, copy, adapt and translate the stories

  • without asking for permission, and
  • without paying a fee.

But you must acknowledge the writers, illustrators, translators of the stories and the people who hold the copyright. This means that you must list these people and their contribution on the story itself when you adapt, translate or copy/print the story for use. You must also acknowledge the source of the stories, i.e. African Storybook.

Some people who contribute stories don’t want other people to make money out of their work. So they ask for a non-commercial restriction when their stories are published.When you use stories with a non-commercial restriction, you must acknowledge the source of the story, as well as the writers, illustrators, translators of the stories and the people who hold the copyright (i.e. list them when you copy, adapt or translate the story). But, in addition, you agree that you will not make a profit out of the sale of the stories.

Write comments on the stories

We’d love you to give us your views on the stories by writing comments on story web page. We would also like to know how you have used the stories.

But please do not write comments that are harmful, defamatory, abusive, threatening, vulgar, obscene or against the law. You are responsible for any content that you put on the website and you will be liable to any third party for your comments.

Creation and translation of stories

If you want to create, adapt or translate a story, you will need to register and state that you agree to all the terms and conditions. You need to be 18 years or older to register on the site.

When you agree to the terms and conditions you:

  1. agree that your story or version/translation will be openly licensed for others to use without permission or payment;
  2. guarantee that the content you post to the ASb website is your own work or that you have permission from another person or organisation to use their content in the stories or comments that you publish on the ASb website;
