THE GOLDEN LUCK

Tyona was a poor boy left with her mother. He was interested in acquiring western education,but his background got him delayed.
How ever,he applied for admission in one of the local university around their metropolis and was given.

Tyona held his admission Letter with shaking hands. first person in his family to enter university. Joy mixed with fear. His village had no ATMs, no no constant power. He did not know how how he would survive in the city.

He took his luggages and his old phone. His mother gave him five thousand naira and prayers.On the bus,he whispered "I will make you proud".the golden luck started with a "yes",even though he was scared.

There,he started waking at 4am to study in peace. He would sit on the floor with a torch. Other boys laughed at him first.Later, some joined him.

In his first class, Tyona couldn't express himself verywell.he spoke village English mixed with his local dialect. Students laughed when he asked questions .
A lecturer told him to speak properly or stay quiet.

He felt small and silent for sometime. He then joined the English club and recorded himself reading daily. He practiced with a mirror. Slowly, his voice grew clean.

Subsequently,his monthly allowance stopped coming. His uncle lost his job.Tyona at once in a day and drank a lot of water. Hunger made his head heavy in the lectures.He watched his friends eat and pretended not not being hungry.

Mathematics was Tyona's worst subject. He failed the first test badly. 40th out of 70.He stared at the red ink and felt stupid.His department friends were solving past questions Already, but he didn't understand.

For two weeks,the campus had no light.phones went off, laptops died. Notes were taken only on papers. Tyona couldn't charge his phone to read PDFs. He felt left behind while others used power banks.He copied notes by hands and borrowed book

Raining season came with cold and sadness.Tyona missed his people particularly the mother, and had no credit to call. He wrote letters and send to them when he could.

Soon, students elections turned messy. Tyona was accused of supporting the wrong candidate.His name was written on a hostel wall,and some students stoped talking to him.

One day in the chemistry lab,Tyona mistakenly broke a glass beaker, chemicals spilled and his shirt got stained.the hostel attendant insulted him and added him extra hours to clean the lab.

Soon,it was time for project. His project group did nothing.they left all the work for him and and still wanted equal marks. He stayed up for weeks writing alone . He documented his work and spoke to the supervisor,and he awarded marks.

Malaria hit Tyona hard during the finals. He had fevers and chills,no money to buy drugs.A room mate borrowed money for his medications.

Tyona later applied for twenty internships. Nineteen said no.only one never replied.He felt useless. He thought companies only wanted connected people whom he wasn't one of them.

But a start up later saw his blog and offered him a role.

However,his final year project was rejected thrice. His supervisor said it was too weak. He read more journals and changed his angle.

He needed money to print his project and bind copies.His account was empty. Defence date was fixed. He walked around campus asking for small help. fortunately,his lecturer connected him to an Alumni fund. They gave him a small grant.

Soon after exams,Tyona checked his results on a borrowed phone.page loaded slowly.His heart beat fast. He saw "second class upper".He sat down on the floor, laughed and then cried.He called his mother and shared the news and she was happpy.

After graduation, tyona got a job through one of the blog he started. It paid small first.but he was no longer afraid of hard things. He was later made the manager of the company and became bouyant.
He viewed his past and laughed.
