The Dancing Drum Of South Africa

Long ago in South Africa.
People loved music, they loved to dance.

1

A girl named Lerato lived there.
She loved to dance.
She danced every day.

2

Every evening, she went outside.
She watched people dance.
She heard a big drum: boom boom!

3

One day, she asked,
"Grandma, where is our music from?"
Grandma smiled.

4

Grandma said,
"Long ago, families taught music."
"Children learned songs and dances."

5

Grandma said,
"Then things changed."
"Children could not learn their music at schools."
Lerato asked, "but why, Grandma?"
Grandma said, "Because the people in charge did not like our music"

6

Lerato felt sad.
"Did music stop altogether?" she asked.
Grandma said, "No"

7

"People kept music at home."
"They sang and danced."
"They danced with pride"

8

"Then South Africa became free."
"Children learned their music again."
"They danced with pride."

9

Lerato danced and smiled.
"Music tells our story!" she said.
The drum went boom boom!
