Otieno and the ogre
Eric Ouma

Long ago, in a village near the shores of Lake Victoria, the people lived in fear of an ogre called Jonyo, a giant with eyes as red as fire and teeth like sharpened spears. Every night, he would come from the forest,

1

stealing cattle and scaring children.
One day, a clever young man named Otieno decided he would stop Jonyo. He filled a large pit with sharp thorns and covered it with leaves. That night, when Jonyo came, he stepped right into the trap,

2

crying in pain. The villagers rushed out and tied him with strong ropes.
From that day, Jonyo never returned. The people learned that courage and cleverness could overcome even the fiercest ogres. And every time a child felt afraid.

3

the elders reminded them of Otieno, the boy who outsmarted the ogre.
