Just the way we are
Pearl Ishabor

Amara and her family are preparing to travel abroad.

They are going to Canada.

1

After packing her clothes, Amara sees a European girl on TV.

"Wow!" she exclaims, "Her straight hair is so pretty!"

2

Amara rushes to her mom's room and picks up her hair styling comb.

She then goes to her room to hide and straighten her curly hair.

3

Amara's sister, Oluchi, comes looking for her.

She wanders into Amara's room and sees her straightened hair. "Amara!" she calls.

4

Oluchi gets some water and sprinkles it on Amara's hair. This causes the hair to shrink back up.

"Hey!" Amara yells, "I just straightened it!"

5

Oluchi kneels in front of Amara and wipes her tears.

She says, "Amara, you don't have to straighten your hair to look like anyone else to belong.

We are moving to a new place where everyone may not look like us. We shouldn't change our features."

6

"Your curls are not a mistake. They are beautiful and unique," Oluchi says.

She continues, "Our skin, our hair, our history are all things we should be proud of. Remember, we shine because we are unique."

7

Amara learned to accept her curls. She also learned to accept all her special features because they made her unique.

This made her thrive when she arrived in Canada.
