A beautiful river passed through the land of Kona people. It was called River Nukkai.
It was the main source of drinking water. It was also the source of people's livelihood.
A crocodile lived in the Nukkai River with his family and other aquatic animals.
The people who lived around polluted the river with all kinds of rubbish.
Some even relieved themselves on the river banks.
The crocodile was not happy with these activities. One day, he followed Jirvanang from the river after she dumped dirt there.
She was so scared. She thought the crocodile wanted to eat her.
The crocodile also chased Nokani from the river banks. He had gone there to relief himself.
"Don't you know that rains wash all dirt into the river? When you drink, you become sick," the crocodile told him.
Other villagers used poison to kill fishes. Both big and small fishes died.
The people still drank the same water. Some died from a strange sickness.
The crocodile was not happy.
The people of Kona village were not happy. The crocodile was no longer allowing them near the river.
They held a meeting at the palace of the Kuru Kona. They agreed that they would attack and kill the crocodile.
They gathered at the Nukkai River with their weapons. "Why are you chasing our children from the river?" they asked.
The crocodile came out. He rebuked them for polluting the river and causing diseases.
The people were sorry. The Kuru Kona commanded the village to clean up the river.
The crocodile and the Kona people were very happy. They made the crocodile the Guardian of River Nukkai.
