Nomsa loved visiting Gogo's house during the holidays, but this summer something was wrong.
The vegetables in Gogo's garden were dying.
The tomatoes had turned brown.
The spinach was yellow.
Even the strong mealies looked tired and bent.
"My garden tap is broken. I cannot carry buckets of water from my house to the garden," Gogo said sadly.
That night, Nomsa heard thunder rumbling. She had an idea!
Nomsa and her friend collected all the containers that they could find.
The next morning, dark clouds gathered.
"It is going to rain!" shouted Nomsa. They hurried to put the containers outside.
The rain poured down! The plants were watered and the containers filled up with water.
They danced with joy.
The next day, they used some of the collected rainwater.
They watered each plant carefully, talking softly as Gogo had taught Nomsa.
Within a few days, the garden was green again!
The vegetables grew strong and healthy in the South African sunshine.
"You saved our garden," said Gogo, hugging Nomsa.
"We saved it together," said Nomsa with a smile, picking ripe tomatoes.
Simple ways to save water:
*Turn off running taps.
*Collect rainwater.
*Do not let the tap run when brushing your teeth.
*And, shower, do not bath.
