The Golden Wings
Puseletso Julia Moloi

It is in the village of Senyamo, Qwaqwa, where we find Kabo and her mother, Masehlako.

The two lived alone because Kabo's father had passed on. They were poor.

1

Kabo attended school with children from rich families.

When it was time to eat, these children would sit under a tree and talk about their happy lives.

This would make Kabo feel very sad.

2

One day, Teacher Mofokeng gave the children an assignment. They were to write an essay about traveling to faraway places and how they enjoyed themselves there.

Kabo was sad because she had never traveled anywhere.

3

That night Kabo wondered what it would be like if she had wings. She could fly to faraway places where she had never been before.

She composed this song:

Wings, where are you?
Wings, take me faraway!
Wings, wings, take me to far places.

4

In the morning Kabo woke up happy because of the dream she had had. In the dream, she had arrived at a faraway place.

She had been excited to be there in her dream place.

5

That night Kabo sang before going to sleep but she did not dream.

She woke up very sad. She did not despair because she always said, "Patience brings success."

6

The next day Kabo fell asleep as soon as she got into bed.

At three o'clock in the morning, she was awakened by a loud voice saying, "My daughter, please sing that beautiful song."

Kabo sang in her beautiful voice.

7

Surprisingly, Kabo grew beautiful white wings? Then a voice said, "Fly, and go wherever you wish to go."

Kabo went outside, and met witches flying around. She wondered if she had become a witch.

8

That day she went to school with a lot of mixed thoughts.

She told herself that in the evening she would ask the Voice to let her fly to distant places during the day.

9

On Friday, Teacher Mofokeng told the children that on Monday they would write the essay about 'Traveling to faraway places'.

The children were all happy but Kabo was worried.

10

When Kabo got home, she told her mother about the competition. This worried Msamehlako because they had never traveled anywhere.

At night, she prayed for money when she heard her daughter singing her song.

11

At 03:00 am the voice asked Kabo to sing as usual. Then Kabo asked the voice to fly her to distant places but during the day.

The voice told Kabo to be at the river at 12:00 pm.

12

Kabo went back to sleep and woke up in the morning to clean and cook. At 11:30 am, she asked her mother to let her play with her friends.

She was allowed to go because she had finished her work for the day.

13

When Kabo reached the river, she sang her song and the voice appeared. She wanted to fly to the sea where it was pleasant.

Kabo was given a bag full of gold coins. She immediately grew golden wings and flew up.

14

When Kabo arrived at that place, she saw a big sea, swings and various games. She started swimming and playing all the games there.

She even bought delicious food. Kabo did not want this day to end.

15

When Kabo got home she was very happy and started writing her essay. Everything went smoothly as she kept thinking about the place she had been.

She was eager to get to school and submit her essay.

16

On Monday, the children submitted their essays to Teacher Mofokeng. The teachers took the essays to mark.

The children assembled to read their essays. Everyone was captivated by Kabo's essay. She was the winner of the essay competition.

17

Kabo's mother was very happy with the presents that her daughter received. She thanked God for answering her prayers.

They lived happily ever after because of the golden wings!
