Cindy and the Mannequins
Mpho Sanny Sabasaba

Cindy was a pretty young girl curious about the world.

1

She enjoyed going to work with her mother at a clothing store.

2

Every time Cindy went to the clothing store, she would touch the mannequins.

3

She would ask her mother all kinds of questions.

"Mom, can mannequins talk?"

"Can they feel my hands?"

"Can they see me?"

4

Her mother would reply, "Cindy, don't touch the Mannequins."

One evening, after Cindy's mother closed shop, the Mannequin's gathered.

5

They talked about how Cindy makes them feel unhappy.

"Tickle! Tickle! Tickle!" the boy Mannequin said. "I'm going to paint your toe nails," he continued.

6

"Oh, no! We do not paint our nails," said the lady Mannequin.

So the Mannequins stayed up all night finding ways to get back at Cindy.

7

The next day, Cindy went to the store happy and bubbly, ready to play with the Mannequins.

She played with all of them. When she tried to touch the boy Mannequin, he gave her a big scare, "Boo!" he said.

8

"Mom!" screamed Cindy. Her mother came running to find out what was wrong with her.

Cindy told her mother how the Mannequin gave her a big scare. Cindy's mother laughed, "Silly Cindy."

9

"My baby, Mannequins cannot talk, nor can they touch or see you," said Cindy's mother.

"Oh, mother, it only took a scare from the Mannequins for you to answer my questions," replied Cindy. She and her mother shared a laugh.
