Gogo had a garden. She wanted to grow food. "I will plant spinach," said Gogo. "I will plant carrots and tomatoes too!"
Gogo dug the soil. Gogo planted the seeds. Gogo watered the garden. "Now we wait," said Gogo. "The plants will grow."
Mandla, Jabulan and Lindiwe were playing. They ran and kicked their ball. The ball went into Gogo's garden.
The children ran after it.
STOMP! STOMP! STOMP!
They stepped on the seeds!
"Oh no!" said Gogo. "You are hurting my garden!" The children stopped. "Why is your garden important?" asked Mandla. Gogo smiled. "Come. I will show you."
She pointed to the small plants. "These need water," she said. "They need sun. They need care." "If we help, will they grow?" asked Lindiwe. "Yes," said Gogo. "If you care for the garden, the garden gives you food." The children nodded. "We will help!"
Every day, they helped Gogo. They watered the garden. They pulled out weeds. They kept birds away.
One day, the garden was full! Big tomatoes. Green spinach. Orange carrots. "Wow!" said the children.
That night, they ate soup with Gogo. "This is the best soup ever!" said Jabulan.
Gogo laughed. "Yes! The garden gave us food because we took care of it." The children smiled. From that day on, they never ran in the garden again.
