Thembi's magic bracelet
Lauren Mayisa

It's presentation day in Mrs. Rajesh's English class at Leaway Primary School.

Thembi stands in front, holding her notes tightly. Her palms are sweaty.

Everyone in class is quiet.

1

All the learners staring at her are making her nervous. She tries to speak but gets her information mixed up.

"You can go back to your seat, Thembi. You'll present tomorrow. This will be your last chance," says Mrs. Rajesh.

2

Thembi walked home, feeling sad and disappointed. "But I practiced, Thembi. I knew exactly what to say, how did I mess it up?" she thought to herself.

"Thembi, why don't you greet?" asked Mrs. Dlomo.

3

"I apologise, Mrs. Dlomo, I'm just really sad," replied Thembi.

"Why, what happened?" asked Mrs. Dlomo as she stopped watering her plants.

"I had a presentation at school. I had practiced the whole night but I messed it up," explained Thembi.

4

Mrs. Dlomo paused and said, "Don't worry, young lady. I have something that might help. Stand here, I'll be right back."

She went inside her house and came back with something. "Hold this," said Mrs. Dlomo, handing a bracelet to Thembi.

5

"This bracelet has magic. It will help you do great in your presentation and will give you confidence. Always have it on, and watch it's magic work."

"It's so beautiful! Thank you! I promise, I won't lose it!" said Thembi, rushing home.

6

The next morning, Thembi woke up feeling different - confident and ready. She carefully packed her books inside her bag and put her magic bracelet on.

She looked at herself in the mirror, "I can do this," she said, as she left for school.

7

At school, Thembi impatiently waited for Mrs. Rajesh's period. When she walked in, Thembi's hand shot up in the air. "Ma'am, may I go first?"

Mrs. Rajesh, surprised by Thembi's confidence, smiled and said, "Come up to the front, Miss."

8

Thembi stood at the front. She touched her bracelet and took a deep breath. When she was done, the whole class clapped for her!

"I did it," she whispered. Her heart was dancing. "The bracelet works! I can't wait to tell Mrs. Dlomo!"

9

After school, Thembi ran to Mrs. Dlomo's house. Before she even reached the gate, she shouted, "Mrs. Dlomo! Mrs. Dlomo!"

Mrs. Dlomo came rushing. "What's wrong? Are you hurt?"

"The bracelet works! I did amazing in my presentation!" Thembi said.

10

"I made new friends and wasn't shy at all!" said Thembi.

"That's wonderful news! The truth is, the bracelet doesn't have any magic. You had that in you all along," said Mrs. Dlomo, holding her hand.

"I… I don't understand!" said Thembi.

11

"You didn't need a magic bracelet. You just needed to believe in yourself," said Mrs. Dlomo.

From that day on, Thembi never wore the bracelet again. She became a top student in her class. Her lunch breaks were fun with her new friends.
