Pulane was a very young Sotho girl raised by her grandmother. They lived in the outer parts of the Free State in Virginia around Lejweleputswa.
Pulane was curious to know what her name meant.
"Nkgono, what does my name mean?" Pulane asked her grandmother.
Nkgono replied, "Pulane, my child, I do not know the meaning of your name nana. Your mother left this world without telling us."
Pulane was not happy that Nkgono did not know.
Pulane went around the village asking people what her name meant.
People were too busy working and were not interested in talking to Pulane.
Pulane went as far as the nearest forest searching for answers of her name. She saw clouds forming and was worried that she was far from home.
Pulane knew that Nkgono would have no one to help her with cooking.
Nkgono was very worried about her granddaughter.
She knew very well that Pulane was scared of rain and thunderstorm.
Soon, Nkgono saw Pulane running fast towards the house.
Although Nkgono was scared, she started laughing.
"Why are laughing Nkgono?" asked Pulane.
Nkgono replied, "Now I see why your mother named you Pulane. It is because you are scared of rain."
From that day, Pulane understood the meaning of her name.
She went around the village telling people what her name meant.
Pulane means Rain.
