The Clever Crow
Merit Ibekeme

In the village of Umuka, where mango trees stretch their leafy arms towards the sky, there lived a boy named Chuka.

Chuka loved to sit under the big mango tree near his house. He enjoyed watching birds fly from branch to branch.

1

One afternoon, as Chuka was sitting in his favourite place, he saw a black crow. The crow always caught his attention more than any other bird.

Chuka watched as the crow flapped its wings and cried loudly near an old pot. The poor bird looked thirsty!

2

Chuka ran closer and saw a small drop of water at the bottom of the pot. The crow tried to reach it, but its beak couldn't touch the water.

"Oh no! Poor crow," Chuka said. " If only you could speak, I would help!"

3

The crow tilted its head as if it understood what Chuka had said. Then, something amazing happened!

The crow picked up a small stone and dropped it into the pot.

4

Plop! Comes the sound as the crow drops stones in the pot. Then another plop! And another!

Chuka is watching the crow. "Is the crow playing a game?" He wonders. But then he notices something magical!

5

The water level was rising! The crow kept dropping stones, one by one. Soon, the water reached the top of the pot.

"Wow! The crow is so clever!" Chuka clapped his hands in excitement.

6

The crow dipped its beak into the pot and drank the water. "Caw! Caw!" it cried happily.

"Mr. Crow! You are a genius " Chuka laughed.

Just then, Chuka's friend Chichi, came over. "Chuka why are you talking to a crow?" she asked.

7

"The crow solved a problem all by itself!" Chuka replied. Chichi watched as the crow drank water from the pot using its beak.

"So the crow figured out how to drink the water from the pot? That's amazing!" She said.

8

Chuka nodded with a smile and said, "Yes! This crow is clever."

9

As the crow flew away, Chuka turned to his friend, Chichi.

He said, "I learned something today, Chichi. We can always think of ways to solve our problems."

10

"That's true, Chuka!" Chichi said.

"If a crow can be smart, then we can be smarter. Every problem has a clever solution just waiting to be discovered," Chuka added.

The two friends walked home.

11

The next day, they gathered their friends and told them about the crow's amazing trick.

The children clapped. They talked about how they could use clever ideas to tackle their own little challenges.
