The Sacred Chaone Hill

On the western side of Lake Chilwa, Chaone Hill rises out of the calm waters.

It is believed that mysterious events happen at that Hill.

1

The villagers don't dare go to Chaone Hill to fish or cut trees.

"No one fishes there, lest they face the unknown," the villagers whisper to each other.

2

Zuze has just come from the city to live with his grandparents.

He is a troublesome boy who doesn't listen to anyone.

3

"I will go fishing at Chaone Hill. There should be a lot of fish there," Zuze announced.

"Don't dare," Zuze's friends challenged him.

4

One afternoon, Zuze jumped into his grandfather's canoe and headed to Chaone.

He puddled like a mad boy, getting closer faster than he had imagined.

5

As he got into the reeds surrounding the island, he heard strange sounds.

"Turn back while you still can," voices commanded from the reeds.

6

He threw his fishing line in the open area. The hook got tangled underwater.

His puddle suddenly fell into the water and drifted away.

7

Zuze stopped thinking.

For days, he went missing. The village elders went to Chaone to perform their sacrifice.

8

Later, Zuze was found weak and speechless, drifting along the shore of Lake Chilwa. He was rushed to the elders for the return ritual.

When Zuze was well, he talked of mysterious voices and sensations that he experienced at Chaone Hill.

9

He promised never to mess with the spirits of Chaone Hill again.

Some villagers wondered, "Let's see if he keeps his promise."
