It was the first day of school. Little girls and boys across the land were waking up excited for their big day. Lesego was one of them, but something was wrong.
Her mom had done her hair the night before, but now it was a tangled mess.
"Ow, Dad! That hurts!" Lesego cried. " I'm sorry. I'm not used to doing your hair," her dad replied awkwardly.
Lesego sighed. "Mom usually sprays water first."
Her dad nodded, spritzing water on her hair. Slowly, it started to smooth out.
Across town, Jessica woke up to get ready. Alas, the bad hair day monster was out to get her too.
As she rubbed the sleepiness from her eyes, she realised that her hair was oily and static.
Her mom washed her hair and applied leave-in conditioner. Jessica sat in front of the mirror and asked, "Mom, why isn't my hair curly like yours?" Her mom replied, "Your hair is perfect! How about we add some fun clips today?"
Back at Lesego's , her dad tied her hair into two puffs. It wasn't perfect, but they laughed at the result.
"Not like Mom's, but we did it!" Lesego giggled.
"You look beautiful," her dad chuckled while holding her hand.
At school, Lesego and Jessica met at the door.
"Your hair looks cute!" Lesego said.
"Thanks! I like your puffs!" Jessica replied. They laughed, feeling better about their hair.
During break, two boys, Kgosi and Namjoon, joined them on the swings.
"You guys look like twins with your hair," Kgosi teased.
"Yeah, my dad tried, but it didn't turn out like Mom's," Lesego said, smiling.
Namjoon sighed, "I wish my hair would stay flat. No matter how much gel I use, it just never stays flat."
Kgosi laughed, "I'd love to have hair like yours. Mine takes forever to retwist."
Lesego smiled at everyone. "I guess we all have hair problems."
"But it's cool how we all have different hair," Jessica added.
The group nodded in agreement. Even though their hair didn't always cooperate, they realized how unique they all were.
"Our hair is part of who we are!" Namjoon said.
"We may not have perfect hair all the time, but we have each other," Kgosi added.
Lesego smiled at her friends. "And that's all that matters!"
