Once upon a time, the animals were worried about how humans killed them needlessly.
They called a meeting to find a solution.
They first crowned Elephant as King. Elephant said they needed to spy on the human kingdom.
"We need to attack them when they are not prepared," Pigeon suggested.
"We must be careful not to be used as meat," Giraffe said.
Cock was chosen to be the spy. He was to blow a trumpet to help humans keep time.
"Blow it to wake them up. Blow it to let them know the time to go to bed. Let them know you're a useful friend," Elephant instructed Cock.
Elephant said, "Despite my size and power, men can kill me if we attack them without good preparation."
Elephant whispered to Cock the sound that would alert the animals when it was the best time to attack.
Cock took Hen along with him. The animals were worried about Cock's behaviour. He loved chasing women and could be killed running after people's wives.
When they arrived, they found Man harvesting corn.
Man was very nice and generous. He allowed Cock and his wife to eat as much as they wanted.
"I will take you to my house and make a coop for you where the fox cannot reach to kill you," Man promised.
Cock became happy and comfortable with Man. He forgot the animals and all the instructions.
He blew the trumpet to keep time for man. He never gave the signal for the animals to attack.
One day, Man had visitors. He prepared pounded yam for them but there was no meat.
So, he caught Cock and slaughtered him while the hen was incubating her eggs.
That is how humans started keeping chickens.
