Up on the slopes of mount Kenya, gandma Nyokabi lived alone, she was a good farmer, she farmed "ngwaci" and "nduma".
She also worshipped God every day under the mugumo tree in the evening she offered sacrifice to the spirits.
Grandma Nyokabi did not have any children or grandchildren to help her. She kept praying and sacrificed her lambs to spirits.
A bad dorught had hit the kikuyuland and for two years crops kept dying.
Nyokabi was left with few lambs, her grains were almost over, she ate only one meal a day.
People had given up on praying for rains, the village stopped worshipping at the "mukurwe
wa nyagathanga".
However grandma Nyokabi did not stop, she kept praying every evening, this particular evening she was left with only four lambs whose mother's she had slaughtered and eaten.
Has she was praying, the spirits saw that she was faithful.
The spirits sent, "mahali" the spirit of wealth and health. "Mahali" visited the slopes of mount Kenya and paid a visit to. Nyokabi.
Nyokabi was very surprised to see the great spirit, she had beautiful wings .
Her wings looked like those of butterflies during the flowering season. Her wings were yellow and purple at the edges.
"Nyokabi the gods and spirits have listened to your prayers, today they are answered. " The spirit said to her.
"Thank you," Nyokabi said back to the spirit.
"You will be granted one thing that you wish to have,in wealth and health."
Nyokabi thought very hard as the spirit fairy waited for her. " What should I choose?" She wondered.
The granted wish was wear off,if she was consumed by greed and wished for another thing.
Nyokabi had been poor and her house was small, she had seen other villagers build nice houses down the slopes of mount Kenya. She could buy iron sheets.
She wished for a nice house and in a moment the sprirt chanted and granted her the wish.
Nyokabi was amazed and very happy with her new house for it was big and had nice sofa, bed and tables. It was bigger and better than the others.
The house Nyokabi house was big and she bragged through the whole village about it.
Nyokabi was old and she was worried of what will become of her grand house. "if only I could live longer," she wished.
In a twinkle, Mahali the spirit fairy appeared, she warned Nyokabi about the consequences of their agreement she had broken . Everything she was granted was to be taken back.
The sprirt chanted and Nyokabi was back to her old muddy house.
